Comprehensive Eye Exams
A Comprehensive Eye Exam is more than just checking whether you need glasses or contact lenses. It is a thorough evaluation of your vision, eye health, and how well your eyes work together. Regular comprehensive eye exams can also help detect signs of eye conditions before you notice changes in your vision.
Your exam may include:
- Visual Acuity Test — Measures how clearly you can see at different distances, typically using a Snellen eye chart.
- Refraction — Determines your most accurate prescription for glasses or contact lenses and helps identify nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism.
- Visual Field Testing — Evaluates your peripheral (side) vision and can help identify blind spots or areas of reduced vision.
- Cover Test & Eye Alignment — Checks how well your eyes work together and helps identify conditions such as strabismus and other binocular vision problems.
- Eye Movement & Focusing Tests — Evaluates how well your eyes move, focus, and coordinate when viewing objects at different distances.
- Pupil Evaluation — Checks how your pupils respond to light and provides important information about your eye and neurological health.
- Eye Pressure Testing — Measures the pressure inside your eyes as part of evaluating your risk for glaucoma.
- Eye Health Evaluation — Your eye doctor carefully examines the internal and external structures of your eyes for signs of conditions such as cataracts, glaucoma, retinal problems, and other eye diseases.
More Than a Vision Check
Even if your vision seems perfectly clear, routine comprehensive eye exams are an important part of protecting your eyesight and maintaining healthy vision throughout every stage of life.
- Clear vision is only part of healthy eyes. Schedule your comprehensive eye exam today.

Medical Eye Exams
A medical eye exam is different from a routine vision exam. It is performed when you have an eye-related symptom, concern, or medical condition that requires evaluation, diagnosis, treatment, or ongoing monitoring.
Medical eye care may include the evaluation and management of conditions such as dry eye disease, conjunctivitis (pink eye), glaucoma, cataracts, eye infections, retinal conditions, sudden vision changes, eye pain, redness, flashes, or floaters.
When Is an Eye Exam Considered Medical?
Your visit is generally considered medical when the primary reason for the examination is:
- Evaluation of an eye-related symptom or complaint
- Diagnosis or treatment of an eye condition
- Monitoring or follow-up of an existing eye disease or medical condition
- Additional testing related to a medical eye condition
Medical Insurance vs. Vision Insurance
When an examination is performed for a medical eye condition or eye-related complaint, the visit is typically billed to your medical insurance plan rather than your routine vision plan.
Routine eye exams that primarily evaluate vision and determine a prescription for glasses or contact lenses may fall under a separate vision benefit and may not be covered by your medical insurance.
Insurance coverage varies by plan. Copays, deductibles, coinsurance, network requirements, and other plan limitations may apply.
Why Does This Matter?
The insurance used for your visit is determined by the reason for your examination, your diagnosis, and the services provided. Our team will be happy to help you understand how your visit may be billed; however, final coverage and patient responsibility are determined by your insurance plan.

Myopia Contol
Myopia Control for Children
Don't Just Correct Their Vision. Help Protect Their Future Sight.
When your child's eyeglass prescription gets stronger year after year, it's easy to think that stronger glasses are simply part of growing up.
But progressive myopia—commonly called nearsightedness—is more than just blurry distance vision.
As myopia progresses, the eye typically grows longer. Higher levels of myopia are associated with a greater lifetime risk of serious eye conditions later in life.
That's why we believe parents deserve to know that there may be more we can do than simply prescribe stronger glasses.
At Rutherford Eye Care & Cedar Grove Eye Care, our Myopia Control Program is designed to help slow the progression of your child's myopia while keeping their vision clear and comfortable.
The Earlier We Act, the More Time We Have to Make a Difference.
Your child's eyes are growing—and their vision deserves to be protected along the way.
Traditional glasses and contact lenses correct the blur caused by myopia, but standard vision correction generally isn't designed to slow its progression.
Myopia control takes a different approach.
Our doctors evaluate your child's prescription, eye growth, age, lifestyle and individual risk factors to recommend a treatment designed specifically to help manage myopia progression.
You can't change the myopia your child already has—but you can take steps today to help slow where it goes from here.
OUR MYOPIA CONTROL TREATMENTS
We offer several advance treatment options because no two children-- and no two familes--are alike.
Ortho-K
Clear Vision During the Day—Without Glasses or Contacts.
Orthokeratology, or Ortho-K, uses specially designed contact lenses that your child wears while sleeping.
The lenses gently reshape the front surface of the eye overnight. They're removed in the morning, allowing many children to see clearly throughout the day without glasses or daytime contact lenses.
Beyond the freedom from daytime eyewear, specially designed Ortho-K lenses are also used to help slow myopia progression in children.
It's an especially exciting option for active kids who play sports, swim, or simply don't want to wear glasses during the day.
Sleep in the lenses. Wake up. See clearly. Help manage myopia.
MiSight® one Day Contact Lenses
A Daily Contact Lens Designed Specifically for Myopia Control.
MiSight® 1 day lenses give children the convenience of a fresh disposable contact lens every day while providing clear vision and helping slow the progression of myopia.
There's no overnight lens wear and no lenses to clean or store.
Your child simply puts in a fresh pair in the morning, enjoys clear vision throughout the day, and throws them away at night.
For children who are ready for contact lenses, MiSight can make myopia management feel surprisingly simple.
Clear vision. Fresh lenses every day. Myopia management built right in.
Low-Dose Atropine
Simple Treatment. Powerful Addition to a Myopia Management Plan.
For some children, our doctors may recommend low-dose atropine eye drops to help slow myopia progression.
The drops are typically used at home and may be recommended alone or as part of a broader myopia management strategy.
We'll carefully determine whether atropine is appropriate for your child, select the treatment approach, and monitor their vision and eye health throughout treatment.
A simple daily routine designed to help protect their vision as they grow.
Stellest® Myopia Control Eyeglass Lenses
Myopia Control Built Into Their Glasses.
Not every child is ready for contact lenses—and they don't have to be.
Essilor® Stellest® lenses combine everyday vision correction with specialized lens technology designed to help slow myopia progression in children.
They look and feel like eyeglasses, making them an appealing option for younger children or families who prefer a glasses-based approach to myopia management.
Your child gets the clear vision they need today while their lenses work to help manage their myopia for tomorrow.
Their glasses can do more than help them see—they can become part of protecting their future vision.
Why Wait for Their Presription to Get Stronger?
If your child's prescription has already changed, simply waiting until next year's eye exam means giving myopia more time to progress.
There is no way to guarantee exactly how quickly an individual child's myopia will progress. But when appropriate treatments are available to help slow that progression, we believe parents should have the opportunity to understand their options.
That's why our approach isn't:
“Let's just make the glasses stronger next year.”
It's:
“What can we do now to help slow this down?”
Myopia control requires commitment from the doctor, the child, and the parent. We'll be there throughout the process—monitoring your child's vision, measuring their progress and adjusting their treatment when necessary.

Dry Eye Treatment
Relief for Dry, Irritated Eyes Starts Here
Dry, burning, watery, or tired eyes can affect everything from reading and screen time to simply enjoying your day. At Rutherford Eye Care & Cedar Grove Eye Care, we take a personalized approach to dry eye—looking beyond temporary relief to understand what’s causing your symptoms and finding the treatment that feels right for you.
Our advanced dry eye treatments are designed to soothe irritation, restore comfort, and help your eyes feel refreshed again.
IPL — Intense Pulsed Light Therapy
Gentle technology. Lasting comfort.
IPL is an advanced, non-invasive treatment designed to address inflammation and improve the function of the oil glands that help keep your tears from evaporating too quickly.
Treatments are performed comfortably in our office and require little to no downtime. For many patients, IPL provides a relaxing, spa-like experience while treating one of the underlying causes of chronic dry eye.
Calm inflammation. Restore healthier tears. Enjoy more comfortable eyes.
Punctal Plugs
A tiny solution that can make a big difference.
Sometimes your eyes produce tears—they just don't stay around long enough. Punctal plugs are tiny, comfortable devices gently placed into the natural tear drainage openings of the eyelids.
By helping your natural tears remain on the surface of your eyes longer, punctal plugs can provide simple, lasting moisture and relief without adding another step to your daily routine.
Prescription Dry Eye Medication
When your eyes need a little extra help healing.
For some patients, prescription eye drops can help reduce inflammation and improve the eye's natural ability to produce and maintain healthy tears.
Rather than taking a one-size-fits-all approach, our doctors carefully select treatment based on your symptoms, tear quality, eye health, and lifestyle. Your treatment may be used alone or combined with other therapies for greater comfort and longer-lasting relief.
A Treatment Plan Made for Your Eyes
Dry eye isn't the same for everyone—and your treatment shouldn't be either.
Whether you need advanced IPL therapy, punctal plugs, prescription medication, or a combination of treatments, we'll create a personalized plan designed around one simple goal:
Helping your eyes feel comfortable, refreshed, and like themselves again.

Because you deserve seeing EVERYWHERE you go.
